Artichokes and Hollandaise

When I was around 3 or 4, my pappy---mom's dad, who was a flying ace in WWI, started the peruvian air force, and taught us how to mislead mom---died. Well meaning neighbors from all over our East Tennessee suburban neighborhood of Colonial Heights brought endless cassaroles and other dining monstrosities. At three, I found this insanely not good. So after a few too many days of grean beans soaked in campbell's mushroom soup topped with dehydrated onions, I went crying to mom and asked her […]

Today, on the 5th of september 2025 we harvested our first ever artichokes! It was quite the occasion even though the rain was pouring down. The plants were a gift from dear friends back in May and they have grown so well during this sunny and beautiful summer.

We had them for dinner, with beurre blanc and white wine and they were divine! We will definitely try to grow them again next year. @FrejLonnfors harvested the artichokes and can be seen posing with the incredibly tall sunflowers in the last picture.

TIL that Jerusalem artichokes and artichokes are not the same.

I did make a recipe with artichokes instead of Jerusalem artichokes. (The artichoke and potato hash.) Still tasted nice, but it wasn't the right recipe.

Unfortunately, quite a few recipes in the NiMe cookbook want Jerusalem artichokes, and these seem to be rare around here.

"Would you like French fries with that?"

"Yes."

[Later]

"Waiter! There's a problem with my order."

"Oh?"

"These fries are not French."

"What makes you say that?"

"They speak Spanish!"

I think I'm old enough and wise enough to admit that maybe I just don't like #Artichokes.

Definitely don't like preparing them.

Pretty sure I rarely like eating them, which sometimes feels like just as much as work as preparing them.

Simmered for a long time in something that renders them near undetectable? Sure, fine.

Otherwise -- I think I'll just skip them.
