Hoy destripamos «De las profundidades de la Tierra» de Arthur Machen, dentro de su antología «Cuentos» (Siruela, 1987). Arthur Machen (1863 - 1947) fue un escritor británico de finales del siglo XIX e inicios del siglo XX, conocido principalmente por su influyente literatura sobrenatural y de terror fantástico. Su novela corta «El gran dios Pan» ha ganado la reputación de ser un clásico del horror. Es también conocido por ser el principal creador del mito de los Ángeles de Mons, leyenda relacionada con las tropas británicas durante la I Guerra Mundial. Es autor de obras como «Los tres impostores» (1895), «El pueblo blanco» (1899) o «El terror» (1917) entre otras.

Musical Interlude: I'm going a bit dark today....in 2016 Ross Crean composed a chamber opera based on the classic horror story "The Great God Pan" by Arthur Machen. The story, of a woman born from a union between a human and an otherworldly force, and who grows to wreak a path of destruction, is regarded as one of the all-time greats. This adaptation makes her a more nuanced character, a femme fatale who is also a symbol of female liberation, and also a victim of forces beyond her understanding or control.

Dank der schlampigen Angaben in meinem Aubrey Beardsley-Buch von Zweitausendeins wusste ich gut 30 Jahre bis diese Woche nicht, dass Beardsley zwei Erstausgaben von #ArthurMachen gestaltet hat.

BTW: Welche finsteren Mächte hindern uns eigentlich heute daran, weiterhin so schöne Bücher zu machen? (»Die Andere Bibliothek« ist dabei ausdrücklich nicht gemeint, die können das noch.)
