The global polycrisis intensified in 2025. One indication of this is that military violence has reached levels not seen since World War II, while global military spending has climbed to an all-time high. Rather than offering a systemic analysis of this situation, the media is dominated by the views of private sector elites and their political allies. These elites praise armament programs and ‘war readiness’ as a solution to the downward spiral. One major obstacle to nuanced, critical debate is the friend/foe dichotomy, which legitimizes military actions and their preparation. How can we overcome this binary reductionism and initiate urgently needed public debate on the increasing militarization and intensification of warfare?
