Beetles of the genus #Cheironitis (#Scarabaeinae) are characterized by a strikingly #robust #morphology in the #adults, while the larvae usually resemble cockchafer grubs. These are #dungbeetles that exhibit #broodcare. They are widespread in #arid regions of the #Palearctic and #Afrotropical regions. YuHeng Wang et al. It is a harsh land and now in late January the temperature is > 34°C and it hasn't rained significantly since late August.
The tall plants visible in the photo are called Pigs Ears because of their succulent, broad, flat leaves.
The Pogs Ear is part of the Renosterveld biome which roughly translated means rhinoceros land or fields.

Bat Eared Foxes

We were privileged to see Bat Eared Foxes in the Mountain Zebra National Park. They use those big ears to detect insects which they then dig for in the dry sand.
