Tony Vaccaro was not a combat photographer -- he was a soldier who photographed combat. He carried his 35mm Argus C-3 with him, and its small size (compared to professional cameras of the time) allowed him to take photos that the pros usually couldn't. After WWII, he became a well known magazine photographer.
