Complex tongue bones, fleshy teeth on the roof of earliest known bird's mouth https://phys.org/news/2026-02-complex-tongue-bones-fleshy-teeth.html Paper by Jingmai K. O’Connor et al.: https://www.cell.com/the-innovation/fulltext/S2666-6758(25)00289-9

"For a long time, there have been very few things we could say really characterize the transition from terrestrial #dinosaurs to flying bird dinosaurs... These weird little features in the mouth of #Archaeopteryx, that are also found in living #birds, are giving us new criteria"

Some 150 million years ago, Europe was tropical — and mostly underwater. On one cluster of islands, there were unusual creatures. These were some of the earliest birds on the planet. For more than a century, #Archaeopteryx has been the only known bird genus from the Jurassic. Enter: #Baminornis

Discoveries in #Jurassic rocks reveal that #birds were adept fliers earlier than scientists realized.

Some 150 million years ago, in tropical land that is now Europe, there were unusual creatures that didn’t fit in with the rest of the #fauna.

These were some of the earliest birds on the planet: about the size of crows, with black feathers, and probably partial to eating insects.

They also didn’t look like modern birds.

They had teeth in their jaws and claws at the ends of their wings — features seen on no adult birds today.

These German animals were #Archaeopteryx, and they bore many traces of their #dinosaur ancestors.

How did birds evolve? The answer is wilder than anyone thought

"No, no, the 'A' is not for 'Anna', it is for 'Archaeopteryx'."

Ich wusste gar nicht, dass #Archaeopteryx in zuerst Deutschland entdeckt wurde. Und schon gar nicht wusste ich, dass Archaeopteryx eines der bedeutsamsten Funde der Erdgeschichte ist.

#Archaeopteryx (/ˌɑːrkiːˈɒptərɪks/ ⓘ; lit. 'ancient wing'), sometimes referred to by its German name, "Urvogel" (lit. Primeval Bird) is a genus of bird-like dinosaurs. The name derives from the ancient Greek ἀρχαῖος (archaîos), meaning "ancient", and πτέρυξ (ptéryx), meaning
