#Aqueducts that go over motorways or highways fascinate me. That's a water bridge. Not a bridge over water but a bridge of water crossing high up over a road with cars! 😆 Like I expect to see cars up there but not boats and water. 😂 #CanalBoatDiaries

Roman Water Systems and Public Hygiene: How Infrastructure Sustained the Empire

Long before modern plumbing, ancient Rome had developed an advanced water and sanitation system that set it apart from most of the world. Starting in 312 B.C. with the construction of the Aqua Appia…

Aqueducts of the Romincka Forest, Stańczyki, Poland (part 3 of 3)

According to the 1938 timetable, three pairs of passenger trains ran daily on the Gołdap–Żytkiejmy–Gąbin line. An additional pair operated on Saturdays and Sundays. Passenger traffic between 1927 and 1933 was not large in an area with one of the lowest population densities. After 1933 it decreased further when, by order of the Reichsjägermeister Hermann Göring, the entire Romincka Forest was enclosed with a fence, becoming a restricted area for private meetings of German leaders.

In 1945 the withdrawing Red Army dismantled the tracks, and they have remained so to this day.

The first, southern bridge was built between 1912 and 1917 as part of a transport corridor of great strategic and economic importance connecting Chojnice with Olita (now in Lithuania). Its construction was interrupted by World War I, but the building was ultimately completed. After the war, between 1923 and 1926, the second, northern bridge was constructed.

The Gołdap - Żytkiejmy - Gąbin railway line was opened in the autumn of 1927.

The northern ends of Masuria belong to the least visited corners of the country. It is here, among charming hills and meadows, behind the village of Stańczyki, that the massive bridges of the disused Gołdap–Żytkiejmy railway line are located. These bridges are the highest on the line and among the tallest in Poland.

The bridges are 200 meters long and 36 meters high. The structure is reinforced concrete, with five spans, each with equal 15-meter arches. The pillars are decorated with elements modeled after Roman aqueducts, hence the name: “Aqueducts of the Romincka Forest.”

This Sunday, our international group wandered through hidden parks, spotted free-roaming animals, and discovered ancient aqueducts under the shadow of a dormant volcano. Walking together reminded us how curiosity and nature connect people from all over the world – even in the middle of a bustling city. Thanks to everyone who joined!

Excellent podcast episode on Roman aqueducts. There are over 2,700 and that number is likely to climb. Lots of nerdy facts, plus plenty on politics and lead pipes. #roman #aqueducts #water #history #travel #engineering #lead #mediterranean https://shows.acast.com/the-ancients/episodes/roman-aqueducts

One of Europe’s Hottest Cities Rediscovers an Old Cooling Technique

By Laura Millan
August 8, 2023

"The streets of #Seville in southern #Spain were so hot that July afternoon that it felt almost impossible to walk outdoors. As temperatures approached 42C (108F), people scrambled to find shelter in air-conditioned homes, offices and public buildings. Yet, less than two miles from the city center, a cool breeze blew under a giant white roof.

"The structure is a part of CartujaQanat, an architectural experiment in cooling solutions that doesn’t rely on burning more planet-warming #FossilFuels. The site, about the size of two soccer fields, includes two auditoriums, green spaces, a promenade and a shaded area with benches. But its star performer remains hidden — the qanat, a network of underground pipes and tubes inspired by Persian-era canals.

"The grid of #aqueducts can lower surrounding temperatures by as much as 10C using just air, water and #solar power, according to Emasesa, the Seville public water company that helped to build it. The system is modeled on ancient tunnels dug to bring water to agricultural fields that were first documented in what is today #Iran. The Persians realized 1,000 years ago that the running water also cooled the air in the canals, so they fashioned vertical shafts to bring that air to the surface.

" 'This is not an air-conditioning system like the one you may have in your home,' says Juan Luis López, the project’s supervisor and an engineer at Emasesa. 'We use natural techniques and materials to reduce temperatures.' "
