Spring has been unusually long-lasting this year, somewhat chilly, which has brought about that heavenly state where everything is in bloom at once instead of in the usual succession. We're right in the middle of the Northern melancholy, that brief moment of the year when life's perishability is at its most tangible. It's a strange, quiet exuberance inextricably tangled with infinite sadness.

So, next week the apple blossoms should be blooming in my favorite orchard (atop a hill in the next town over). I'll be able to gauge things by looking at the neighborhood trees. Taking in the blossoms is one of my traditions. Back when I was a kid, we had both apple and pear trees in our yard, and lying in the grass atop a blossom carpet always grounded me (and still does).
