The medieval ant-lion is thought to be due to a mistranslation of the Hebrew from the biblical book of "Job" where an uncommon word for "lion" (lajisch) was translated as "mermecolion" (ant-lion). This ant-lion is from a c1300-1325 manuscript. #medievalmanuscripts #medievalbeasts #antlion
The medieval ant-lion was said to starve as the lion part could only eat meat while the ant part could only digest grain. This ant-lion from a 1475-1499 version of "Physiologus" shows both parts clearly. #medievalmanuscripts #medievalbeasts #antlion
The second version of the medieval ant-lion was supposed to be the result of a mating between an ant and lion. It had the face and upper body of a lion and the lower body of an ant as in this 1370-75 version of "Physiologus". #medievalmanuscripts #medievalbeasts #antlion
The medieval ant-lion comes in two versions. One version is of a very large ant as in this 1425 version of "De rerum naturis" which seems to have twoo many legs, although perhaps the legs off the head are some sort of feeler? #medievalmanuscripts #medievalbeasts #antlion

“when she #JudyAllen took a photo of an #Antlion bug in the nearby town of Red Cliffs, she did not think too much of it. But after she uploaded the image online, an expert informed her she had taken a rare wild photo of a #MyrmeleonHoustoni, an #insect that has never been officially #photographed in the wild.

Bushwalker takes photo of rare bug in the wild

There were no known photographs taken in the wild of the Myrmeleon houstoni until a regional Victorian woman snapped a photo of one while on a bushwalk.
