Constraining the effect of global change on antifungal resistance

Antifungal resistance is a growing crisis affecting human health and agriculture that could be accelerated by global change. We call for a One Health research agenda to systematically investigate environmental drivers and inform policy to mitigate the potential of global environmental change in fuelling antifungal resistance.

This is encouraging news. Fungi have been kicking our butts for a while, now.

Coccidioides is a neglected fungal pathogen that forms a unique structure, the spherule, to cause disease. This study provides the first high-density transcriptomic analysis of Coccidioides development, showing spherule-specific gene regulation, Ryp1-dependent virulence factors, and potential targets of antifungal therapy.
Candida tropicalis is a important human pathogen that is increasingly resistant to azole antifungals. Although C. tropicalis was thought to be strictly diploid, this study shows that a widely used agricultural fungicide induces ploidy plasticity, leading to the formation of haploid cells that are cross-resistant to antifungal drugs.
Multidrug-resistant bacteria get lots of attention. But some #fungi, too, have become immune to almost every known treatment available, posing another critical threat to global health. Now, researchers have found a compound that seems to kill fungi in an entirely new way: mandimycin.
„A new #antifungal is always exciting and very welcome,” says Oliver Cornely.

Researchers used a nested case-control study design to evaluate the impact of antimicrobial exposure on the risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD), a movement disorder that manifests as tremors, stiffness, and balance issues.
