"Since #Hamas#October7 #terrorist attack, many #Jewish #faculty at #colleges and #universities across the country have been describing their professional lives in language more commonly associated with #trauma than #academic disagreement. In a nationwide #survey of more than 200 Jewish-identifying #US-based faculty conducted between April and July of 2025 by the #AcademicEngagementNetwork (#AEN) and the #AntiDefamationLeague (#ADL), respondents spoke of fear, isolation, and a loss of belonging on their own #campuses.

One Jewish faculty member starkly described the experience: “I’m being attacked online…I have been ostracized by faculty in a smear campaign. I have been advised…not to come to #campus…this is as bad as it gets.” Another shared, “faculty are not talking to me because they know I’m a #Zionist.” And another participant confided, “I am being attacked in all directions, and I no longer feel safe on campus.”

And these aren’t isolated incidents."

The Hidden Cost of Campus Antisemitism: Faculty Mental Health

Since Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack, many Jewish faculty at colleges and universities across the country have been describing their professional lives in language more commonly associated with trauma than academic disagreement.

"There have always been grumblings and mumblings and rumblings about the efficacy of the #Jewish community’s efforts to combat #antisemitism. But over the past two-plus years, in the wake of the wave of antisemitism that has swept the globe since the #Oct7 terror attacks in #Israel and Israel’s war against #Hamas in #Gaza, those disagreements over tactics, policies and strategies have reached a fever pitch, particularly this week.

This comes in light of two nominally distinct events: one being a speech by #NewYorkTimes columnist and Jewish thought-leader #BretStephens at the #92ndStreetY in which he called to “dismantle the #AntiDefamationLeague”; and the other being the release of a new commercial from #RobertKraft’s #BlueSquareAlliance aimed at combating antisemitism, which has, perhaps unsurprisingly, drawn fierce criticism."

A reckoning for the ‘combating antisemitism complex’

He’s worked with the #AntiDefamationLeague and #JewishFederations of North America; the latter credits Ahmed with the backbone of much of its own policy proposals[...]

He’s joined #Republicans in advocating for an end to #Section230, a law granting special protections to #socialmedia platforms. During the first #Trump administration, on the strength of his research, the #British-born Ahmed received a priority visa as an “alien of extraordinary ability” — the so-called “#Einsteinvisa,” after the German-born #Jewish physicist.

All of that only added to Ahmed’s befuddlement when, just before Christmas, the current Trump #StateDepartment announced it would be revoking his #visa because of what #SecretaryofState #MarcoRubio tweeted were “egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

'When the Anti-Defamation League...magnifies offensive graffiti and unflattering tweets to the status of violence, while ignoring actual discrimination, if it exists, they trivialise antisemitism. When they condemn criticism of Israel and Zionism as antisemitic, they risk elevating antisemitism to a virtue. And when those who define antisemitism bend over backwards to allow interpretation of antizionist expression as antisemitic, they contribute to enabling such dilutions'

No ADL, Anti-Police Symbols Aren't Hate Speech

So, even if you ignore everything the ADL explicitly says about Israel or Zionism, it's
still not a reliable source on hate speech.

Did you know that nestled among the 14 words, the swastika, and the burning cross,
the ADL lists ACAB as a hate symbol?

And here's the justification given for the classification:

The acronym ACAB stands for "All Cops Are Bastards" and is a slogan of long standing in the skinhead subculture. Because non-racist skinheads (including "traditional" skinheads and anti-racist skinheads) may use this acronym as well as racist skinheads, it should be carefully judged in the context in which it appears. Now, here's the problem with this justification: something doesn't become a hate symbol merely due to an association or even use by racists or other types of hate groups. If a nazi draws a smiley face that doesn't, in and of itself, make smiley faces 'hate symbols'. If a nazi hates corporate CEO's, that doesn't make CEO bashing hate speech. Similarly, a racist using 'ACAB' doesn't make that abbreviation hate speech.

What makes a symbol hate speech is if the group it is directed at is oppressed by the group using it. This is why words like 'cracker' aren't hate speech--because white people aren't oppressed by black people. Similarly, cops are an oppressor group in our society, which means a word like ACAB simply is not and cannot be hate speech and in fact the insinuation that it can be is in and of itself intensely racist given how cops uphold racism in our society.

There's a lot more I could say about the ADL's classification of this symbol, but I lack the time to elaborate, so I hope this makes clear how deeply insidious this inclusion is.

WTF ADL?

The #AntiDefamationLeague is facing backlash over what critics have called unwarranted hostility toward Mayor-elect #ZohranMamdani, after the org publicized a website & tip line to monitor his admin for actions that could be construed as #antisemitic.

During the final stretch of the mayoral campaign, #Mamdani’s detractors, including #JonathanGreenblatt, chief exec of the #ADL, repeatedly accused him of #antisemitism, a charge he strongly rejects.
