OsKOL4 and OsKOL5, five-gene tandem arrays encoding members of the ent-kaurene oxidase family, play divergent roles in momilactone metabolism, but both act in the production of #antifungal and #antibacterial phytoalexins.

#Neandertals made #antibacterial ointment, but may not have known it

Yet another case of casting doubt on the intelligence and observational powers of our ancestors.

Could you have figured out how to make birch Tar or oil, or even started the fire needed to extract it.

If they had been as stupid and ignorant as modern man we would have died out many years ago.

#Neandertals made #antibacterial ointment, but may not have known it
Neandertals burned birch bark to create a tar that they used to attach stones to weapons and other tools. In modern human cultures, birch tar is used medicinally. Indigenous peoples in the Arctic incorporate it into wound dressings, and the Mi’kmaq, or L’nuk, peoples in Canada use birch bark extract to fight skin infections. These products kill bacteria that cause staph & MRSA.

A team of scientists re-created the way Neandertals made birch tar and found its antibacterial properties could fight off skin infections.

Systematic identification of Salmonella T6SS effectors uncovers diverse new families and lipid-targeting activities

During microbial warfare, bacteria deploy toxins to inhibit or kill competitors. This study reveals lipid-targeting antibacterial toxins and previously unknown toxin domains within Salmonella T6SS effectors, broadening our understanding of enzymatic diversity and the molecular strategies bacteria use to compete in the gut.

Ditch the antibacterial soap this cold and flu season

You still need to wash your hands with soap and warm water though.
