It’s Okay to Be a Solitary Bee – The Office of Weird Ideas

The burrowing bees are so cute. They'll sit right at the entrance of their holes and, when you pass by, immediately retreat. However if you wait patiently they'll come back up again.

I thought I also saw immense bees buzzing around, but they turned out to be furry scarab beetles of some kind!

#InverteFest #bugstodon #insects #bees #beetles #Hymenoptera #Anthophila #Colletidae? #Coleoptera #Scarabaeidae

the females—there seemed to be only a few, maybe only one very popular one—are golden rather than silver, and very slightly broader in build. periodically one saw a little "bee ball" with a female and at least one male rolling around the dusty, sunny slope.

i don't know what family they are—Andrenidae? Colletidae?—anyway, some kind of solitary ground-nesting bee.

@kristiedegaris "drystone also provides a home for many animals, insects and plants, with each wall containing a diverse ecosystem." – so true. One of my favourite pastimes is to walk along drystone walls in a Mediterranean island on a fine Summer day and spot the many solitary native bees that make their homes there into the little cracks. A few examples from Crete, Greece:

Observations

Bees by Albert Cardona

Bees still up and about in Cambridge's Botanic gardens, UK.

Heriades sp., a small mason bee. These bees transport pollen under their abdomens rather than on leg baskets.
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/239341832

Colletes sp., a celophan bee.
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/239258494

Bombus sp., a bumblebee. This likely aged individual has lost its coloration and appears black and white.

Unknown bee, possibly in the family of sweat bees.

At least I saw a lot of cool bugs. Here are 4 orders of insects:

- Orthoptera (grasshoppers, crickets, katydids, etc.)
- Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths)
- Hemiptera (true bugs)
- Hymenoptera (ants, wasps, bees, sawflies)

iNat is being a butt right now so can't narrow it down much.
