I see "claret" mostly in English fiction and thought they were weak-ass watered down red wines. It took #VincentPrice to explain that those California reds I used to enjoy, like #Zinfandels and #Barberas, are indeed clarets, but the North American custom is to refer to the grape and not the classification.

I'm sorry, #EvelynWaugh, #NancyMitford, #AnthonyTrollope, and #PGWodehouse, for believing for scores of years your characters could not handle real alcohol.

#anthonytrollope despised the venality of politics that he observed and participated in as well as describing it in fictional form. It is for contemporary readers to judge how far his example has been followed in 'The Election -A Modern Chronicle of Barsetshire' .
For most of the lifetime of #anthonytrollope there was no secret ballot in elections let alone restrictions on #electionexpenses. The electorate such as it was consisted of a minority of adult males. Conditions are now very different - although past venality may well have continued it would have moved upstream to the approval and selection processes for candidates by political parties . Such processes are key to the main plot line in the novel.
The attempt to be roughly consistent with #anthonytrollope - albeit allowing for a gap of more than a half centuries - does seem to be recognised although I have yet to see how successful it is seen to be! Unlike some others who have used #barsetshire as a background my perspective has been from left of centre rather than from the right. In that respect I believe - possibly erroneously - that I am closer to the original .
Here we go … this year’s big Victorian novel. Can You Forgive Her? #anthonytrollope #thepallisers #bookstodon Indid enjoy The Chronicles of Barset. Wish me luck.

First time lighting the fire this winter. Sitting down with Trollope 😍

It’s Weekend, Let’s Read: Anthony Trollope’s Christmas Stories #PublicDomain #Books

You know I have been reading the Barset Novels (loving them) and I have also read recently The Fixed Period (loved it), so my recommendation for this weekend is again works by Anthony Trollope that I intend to read and you can also read right here, right now.

According with the The Trollope Society, Anthony Trollope has eight stories related to Christmas and I’m making a list here and try to find them online so you can also read them.

  • Catherine Carmichael; Or Three Years Running
    I only found this story in a pdf format which is not very good to read on a mobile or ereader so last year I transformed the pdf into an epub, corrected the typos, and made it available here, where you can read it on the browser or choose to download the epub format.
  • Christmas At Thompson Hall
  • Christmas Day At Kirkby Cottage
  • The Mistletoe Bough
  • The Two Generals
  • The Two Heroines of Plumplington
  • The Widow’s Mite
    These six works can be found at Standard Ebooks. You can download the whole ebook here or go through the table of contents and choose the stories you want to read directly on the browser. The only story that is not a short story is The Two Heroines… that has around 100 pages
  • Not if I Know it
    I couldn’t find this short available online without restrictions, I will be continuing my search and update this post accordingly. If you know where we can find it online and accessible by anyone, do add it in the comments. Trollope’s works are in public domain.

The book in the photo does not have three of the stories: Catherine Carmichael; The Two Heroines of Plumplington; The Widow’s Mite.

Sunday #ReadingSpot ready

* Tea ✓
* Blanket ✓
* Comfy armchair ✓
* 16th November entry of A Nature Diary by Richard Adams read ✓
* The Fixed Period by Anthony Trollope ready ✓

We got a few minutes of sun, which was a bit eerie, we’re still under storm Claudia, and the setting in the photo turned quite dark quickly after. So dark in fact that it is as impossible to read without a light.

It’s Weekend, Let’s Read: Anthony Trollope’s Sci-Fi #Victober #ProjectGutenberg

I’m reading through Anthony Trollope’s six volumes of the Chronicles of Barsetshire – you can check the links to the ebooks in my last year’s post here – and loving it, but for Victober I thought I would pick a more shorter, standalone book from the same author.

I came across The Fixed Period, which he wrote later in life and is considered a satirical dystopian novel. And this is so different from what he usually wrote that I got really curious and decided to pick it up. I’m still in the introduction, but I thought I would share the link to Project Gutenberg, where you can download the book. (No luck in finding it in a physical format, so thank you even more to Gutenberg volunteers!).

Also, although a satirical dystopian work, you may want to check your trigger content warnings.

The Fixed Period – Anthony Trollope can be downloaded here.
