DER WAHLBERLINER
A β˜…β˜…Β½ review of Pier 23 (1950)

William Berke's films are always hit or miss. This would-be noir film has Hugh "Ward Cleaver" Beaumont as the owner of a struggling boat shop who moonlights as a private eye. This feels like it was a couple of failed t.v. episodes spliced together. Beaumont gets involved in two cases, neither which are that interesting (even though one involves pro wrestling). Ann Savage (DETOUR) is the femme fatale in the first segment. Real life wrestler Mike Mazurki (Splitface in Berke's DICK TRACY) is the killer in the second. His character seems like a pale imitation of Mazurki's best role, Moose

Edgar G. Ulmer's 'Detour' (1945), one of the quintessential B noirs, finally got the restoration it deserved. 'Fate, or some mysterious force, can put the finger on you or me for no good reason at all.' #detour #criterioncollection #filmnoir #bluray #tomneal #annsavage #edgargulmer
