@apc While I am more of a cat person, I'm probably going to try to #AniMangaFoundIt from Space Brothers until it fully splashes down, and it is definitely missing some prominent cats, but has an EXTREMELY prominent dog, in its informal mascot, Apo.
Hibito got himself a doofy-lookin' pug when he settled in Houston, nicknamed for "Apollo," and he has often served as companion, alarm clock, sounding board, and plot device for Mutta while he's there.
Enough to earn him placement in the OPs and EDs, and get his dog-butt in the first moments of OP5.
