Take the Vegan Pledge!
Whether you’re a long-time vegan or taking the first steps toward adopting a compassionate, animal-free diet, we all have the power to reduce animal suffering, starting with what’s on our plates! Please pledge not to include meat, dairy, eggs, and all animal ingredients in your diet to create a better world for animals, yourself, and the world! So, you may be thinking, why is animal agriculture and eating animals a problem? From start to finish, animals who are bred, raised, and killed for food endure immense suffering. Whether this happens on large, overcrowded factory farms or small organic farms, the end result is the same: animals who are capable of experiencing joy, love, and pain, as well as the ability to suffer, have their lives stolen from them against their will at just a fraction of their natural lifespans, often in unimaginably terrifying, agonizing ways. Over 80 billion land animals are raised and killed annually for food worldwide, including cows, chickens, pigs, turkeys, and sheep. Roughly two-thirds of the world’s farm animals are born on factory farms, and approximately 160 million of these animals are transported to slaughterhouses to be killed every day. By taking this pledge, you are playing a hands-on role in reducing their suffering. What actually happens to farmed animals, and how can I make a difference? Factory farming is an intensive form of animal agriculture that aims to produce as many animals as possible to maximize profits. Animals are reared in overcrowded facilities with minimal legal protections. They are kept in abhorrent conditions and subjected to horrifically cruel practices. Animals may be confined to tiny cages that are so small they cannot turn around, lie down, or stretch their wings. The tails, beaks, horns, testicles, or toes of animals may be cut or burned off without painkillers. Trillions of fish are also reared in underwater farms or captured from their natural habitats every year. The lives of all animals who are killed for food are cut drastically short. Male chicks are ground up alive since they cannot produce eggs or breast meat and are therefore viewed as “useless.” Piglets are killed by slamming their skulls against the ground. Calves are stolen from their grieving mothers, typically within moments of birth. If they are not immediately killed, male calves are forced into cramped crates that restrict their movement and muscle development. They are then slaughtered for veal. The majority of female calves are forcibly impregnated over and over until they can longer produce milk. They are then slaughtered for meat. What other benefits result from my choice to eliminate animal products from my diet? Our global food system accounts for the mass slaughter of vulnerable animals and is also incredibly resource-intensive. One-third of the world’s cereal crops are grown to feed land animals to produce meat, eggs, and dairy products. Large quantities of water are required to grow these crops and sustain the animals until slaughter. Factory farms also produce large amounts of animal waste, which contaminates water sources in surrounding areas. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Commission indicates that global meat production is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than all trains, cars, and airplanes combined, therefore heavily contributing to the ongoing climate crisis. Beyond the catastrophic animal cruelty and sustainability issues, studies indicate that consumption of animal products is strongly linked to the increased risk of developing chronic diseases such as Type II diabetes, some cancers, heart disease, high blood pressure, and more. Factory farming and the consumption of animal products are responsible for billions of animal deaths, as well as the unprecedented wasting of the world’s natural resources, the potential development of chronic diseases, and the ever-growing threats associated with the climate crisis. Thank you for taking this pledge to reject the atrocities of animal agriculture by eliminating animal meat, dairy, and eggs from your diet and advocating for animals whose cries go ignored.
