William Cave—Anglican scholar, not given to idle speculation—documents something remarkable about the earliest Christians. They surrendered their own freedom to purchase that of others. Traded themselves for prisoners. Hired themselves out as servants to feed the hungry.

One does observe TODAY, in certain quarters, a Christianity more preoccupied with dominance than self-sacrifice. The ancient church had rather different priorities.

This is some big wonderful news! I grew up in the Episcopal church and I have memories of a schism nearly forming over allowing women in leadership (In the '90s and may have been local/regional - I can't remember the details now). I'm excited and hopeful to see continued progress under the Most Reverend Sarah Mullally's leadership.

A woman for the first time leader of the Church of England: Sarah Mullally is elected Archbishop of Canterbury – Video

Sarah Mullally was formally installed as Archbishop of Canterbury. This is the first time a woman has held the office of primate of the Church of England, a historic state church in the United Kingdom since the Anglican schism from Catholicism decreed in 1534 by Henry VII.

The official inauguration took place in the millennium-old Canterbury Cathedral in the presence of Prince William and Princess Kate, among others. The ceremony was also marked by solemn liturgy.

In the traditional Wednesday question time, Prime Minister Keir Starmer wished Mullally well before the British parliament.

Mullaly, who has a background as head nurse in the public health service and who was previously the first female Anglican Bishop of London, emphasized to the BBC the “significance” of her appointment following a series of sexual scandals that culminated in the resignation of her predecessor, Justin Welby, who was accused of having contributed to covering up a case of abuse of boys committed in the decades past within the Eccles community.

Since today is the Feast of the Annunciation and I'm a priest at a church dedicated to Our Lady, figured I'd write a little something about the day (that also aims to challenge the traditions a little bit).

I think it's very cool that Her Grace will be making a Canterbury pilgrimage as part of her transition into being the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Archbishop on the Canterbury Trail - The Living Church

“For centuries, faithful pilgrims have flocked to Canterbury, and I will be reflecting on this tradition as we make our way through the Kent countryside and its towns and cities.”

This morning I would ask that you please #pray for me and the congregation I serve. This is my last #sunday with them. It is a bittersweet moment… my family and I are excited to be heading towards reception into the #Anglican church, but I will miss ministering to this people through #preaching and #sacrament.
