James Pilkington, Puritan, comments on English land use, in light of Nehemiah 5. The princes evicted farmers from vast tracts of land by rent racking and fines. No fraud, just “common dealing”. They hurt people, practiced bad land management.

Anyone today using “common dealing” to evict people and ruin natural settings?

How can you consider the suffering of those working for businesses that you support?

Alexander Crummel, Episcopal minister, relates antebellum social life. Nothing was talked about more than the Christian record against slavery. Without hesitation.

Today, some claim Christian orthodoxy was uniformly proslavery, not hearing other voices. Others excuse “men of their times”, as if nobody ever told them slavery was wrong. Crummel says it took off after 1833.
