Position battle watch for Jets-Giants tonight:

- Wide Receiver
Brandon Smith should get plenty of run today. He’s been getting some reps with Justin Fields lately, helped by Lazard being out. He can push for a roster spot if he keeps standing out.

Arian Smith feels ready for a big play — and based on how he’s looked, it might be hard to keep him off the field when the games matter.

I have my eye on Quentin Skinner too — and Malachi Corley is running out of time to prove he should stick.

- Punt Returner
Xavier Gipson is healthy so we should get the first real test in the Gipson versus Jamaal Pritchett battle at returner. Pritchett has been better all summer IMO — and he’s made a bigger impact as a pass catcher too which can’t hurt.

- Safety
These two preseason games will be Malachi Moore’s real chance at pushing Tony Adams for the starting job.

Jarius Monroe is pushing for a depth spot too.

- Running Back
Three are locked in already and it’s unclear if the Jets want to keep a fourth (a fifth if you count #AndrewBeck). But Donovan Edwards looked great last week and has another shot to impress this week. Should get even more touches with Isaiah Davis banged up.

- Tight End
Jeremy Ruckert still feels safe but it hasn’t been a great summer for him — especially with the emergence of #AndrewBeck). At minimum, Ruckert needs to show something as a blocker.

Also will be good to see Mason Taylor in game action.

- Defensive Line
Leonard Taylor III has come on of late and feels like a safe bet for 53 if he keeps it up.

UDFA Payton Page had a good camp but still needs to augment that with preseason performance.

Who will emerge among the gaggle of guys fighting for depth spots at DE: Eric Watts, Rashad Weaver, Braiden McGregor.

- Linebacker
Jamin Davis and Marcelino McCrary-Ball are battling for that LB3 spot. Davis has had his moments throughout the summer.

- Quarterback
With Tyrod Taylor out a while, this a real opportunity for Brady Cool and Adrian Martinez to show coaches that the Jets don’t need to sign anyon else — they worked out CJ Beathard and Nathan Peterman recently.
