What happens if you add heat to sedimentary rocks? You get fun minerals such as andalusite seen here as the white prismatic, nearly square and diamond crystals in metamorphosed slate. The source of the high temperatures was a granite intrusion that created a contact aureole.

Somehow I didn’t realize until today that I have accumulated a truly massive amount of #kyanite on my desk. Perhaps it used to be #andalusite (Al2SiO5)and has transformed to kyanite (Al2SiO5) by polymorphic reaction during burial on my desk. In the CaCO3 system, calcite is the low pressure polymorph relative to #aragonite, and that is just not as exciting as #kyanite. #MinCup23
