Oh yeah, the Amsterdam Light Festival, that's still ongoing. ๐Ÿ˜… Tomorrow is the last day, so it's time to draw up the balance.

I haven't been as involved with this edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival in comparison with previous editions, think I have paid 'only' three visits. It nevertheless was a relatively interesting edition.

By no means the most interesting one, I don't think we're ever going to get the kind of light festival anymore like the first two or three editions were, but there most definitely have also been far less impressive editions.

It looks like the organisation of the Amsterdam Light Festival has chosen quality over quantity. There were fewer projects this edition compared to previous editions, but the fewer projects that were out there were of a higher level in my opinion. So I hope the ALF will continue on that path moving forward.

By the way, where I normally would have spread the photos out over multiple uploads, this time I'll just post the three photos I had left to share in one go.

Amsterdam Light Festival 2025 on a cruise on the one before last day of the year.
After visiting the exhibition by the great Erwin Olaf, this is of course no match at all, but I still like the photo #amsterdamlightfestival #photography
Back to uploading some photos of the actual Amsterdam Light Festival. Starting with I Contain Multitudes, by Marinella Senatore, along a heavily trafficked river Amstel.

Last artwork from Amsterdam Light Festival: Vendel en de Wolf's Solid Void. Its inspiration has been neutrinos shooting all over the place, including through me and you (shivers). That sudden, accent movement is pretty well displayed in the artwork!

Do visit to see more of their splendid work: @[email protected]

As an example of a brave decision to show not so fancy light art at a light festival: Abri Maximaal by Jop Vissers Vorstenbosch. It didn't blink, it wasn't tidy and it surely wasn't cute. What it it did do, to me, was to make me think about the context (once again). How would the piece be perceived, should it been displayed in a white cube gallery?

Amsterdam Light Festival was a canal cruise organisers' initiative and artworks were planned to be best seen from the boats. Today, I think walking or biking is the better option to see them, even though the cruise is very much fun in its own right. An exception to the rule this year was Xinyi Wang's Whale Fall; the boat gets you way closer than feet. The artwork profits of the close range examination, revealing its scale and dimensions, and the slow movement of the boat adds to its subtle dynamics.

Keep Me Warm by Thomas Bendiksen was probably the most modest artwork of Amsterdam Light Festival, so of course I loved it. A simple light thread covered heater on a roof of an old houseboat, glowing with (imagined) warmth made me go all OMG-it-uses-so-much-energy even though I knew it didn't. A healthy reaction, I'd say.
