Because the Stoics didn't sit in the corner and love their chains. They looked at their chains, judged them clearly, and then, with discipline and courage, decided what to do about them.

Your fate is not your resignation letter. Stop confusing the two.

This is my formula: Amor Fati. Love your fate, especially the difficult parts.

Not quite similar, but it reminds me of Nietzsche's “curse of awareness"—that when you become aware of common societal/moral illusions, you can no longer go back to blind acceptance. This knowledge makes the people around you uncomfortable and isolates you from others who find the illusory world more comfortable.

Awareness comes at the cost of alienation.

So next time you catch yourself using it as a reason to do nothing, ask honest questions. Did you try? Did you push? Or did you just call your lack of action fate to feel better about it?

Marcus didn't love his fate. He mastered his response to it. There's a difference. And that difference matters.

What's the worst piece of Amor Fati advice you've gotten from someone who clearly wasn't living it?

Greatness

My formula for greatness in a human being is amor fati: That one wants nothing to be other than it is, not in the future, not in the past, not in all eternity. Not merely to endure that which happens of necessity… but to love it.

Amor fati is not about accepting injustice quietly. It's about engaging with reality so you can actually do something about what's within your reach.

“I will not relinquish the bliss of the written word”

I wish I had started reading her work much earlier. This ending to her first book Reinventing the Soul ❤️ From loc 4722:

Much of this book was written under the mundane conditions of scholarly exertion. But there are parts—perhaps the best, perhaps the worst—that were written in the rare and enchanting state of inspiration. If this makes me terribly antiquated, I do not mind a bit. Critics may take from me whatever else they wish, but I will not relinquish the bliss of the written word. Amor fati.

Amor fati

Don’t expect anything to happen. Just wait. This waiting is a deep acceptance of the moment as such. Nietzsche called it amor fati — unquestioning love of whatever has fated you to be here. You reach a point where you’re just sitting there, asking, “What is this?” — but with no interest in an answer. The longing for an answer compromises the potency of the question. Can you be satisfied to rest in this puzzlement, this perplexity, in a deeply focused and embodied way? Just waiting without any expectations?

That’s a quote presented by Maria Popova within a much larger post… which you should totally go read. There’s a stillness, and perhaps even tranquility, which I very much hope you’ve experienced. I’ve mastered the walking meditation which is perambulation. But the fully engaged sense of simpy being, when there’s no sense of expectation, is still a surprise when I manage to get far enough out of my own way.
