Shelled #amoeba crawls like an octopus, shifting tactics on the go https://phys.org/news/2026-01-shelled-amoeba-octopus-shifting-tactics.html https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/pjab/advpub/0/advpub_pjab.102.001/_html/-char/en

"Commonly found in #peatlands and freshwater environments, #Arcella belongs to a group called testate #amoebae, characterized by having its body enclosed, almost entirely, within a dome-shaped shell... Through an opening on its underside, Arcella can mold its cell body to create finger-like projections called #pseudopodia to capture prey and move around."

Trojan Horse in Water: Amoebae as carriers for human Norovirus and Adenovirus

In a new study titled “Enteric Viruses and Free-Living Amoebae: Protozoa as Potential Reservoirs and Transport Vessels for human Norovirus and Adenovirus,” published in Water & Ecology, an international team of researchers demonstrated that human norovirus (HNoV) and adenovirus (HAdV) can reside within environmental free-living amoebae (FLA) for up to 12 days. Viruses remained infectious within amoebae while encapsulated, protected from amoebal digestion and structural degradation. The detection of HAdV mRNA further suggests possible viral replication. These findings indicate that FLA may serve as environmental reservoirs and transmission vessels for enteric viruses—challenging the current water treatment efficacy and underscoring the need for updated public health guidance.

🦠#Microbes are in a constant battle for survival! Researchers from @LeibnizHKI @unijena @microverse_exc @unibayreuth discovered how the plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae uses a chemical radar to detect and eliminate predatory #amoebae .The #bacteria produce harmless molecules that the amoebae modify, revealing their presence. P. syringae detects this and produces toxic substances to eliminate the predator. This mechanism could inspire new drugs and pest control strategies! 💊 @dfg_public #EFRE

It's time to consider the Arcellinida shell as a weapon https://www.isep-protists.com/post/arcellinida-shell-weapon

"why is there such a large morphological diversity in shell-bearing #amoebae and what is the function of shells anyway? We knew for a long time that #Arcellinida are masters of the #cytoskeleton as they use it to build their elaborate shells. It was unknown that they use both, the cytoskeleton and shell, in combination to function as small apex #predators in their systems."
