DormouseCraig, the #elephant bull and one of the most famous icons of the #Amboseli #ecosystem in #Kenya, has died at the age of approximately 54. Craig was considered a "super tusker," a rare bull with extremely large tusks that reached almost to the ground. According to the Kenya #Wildlife Service, he died of natural causes due to his advanced age.

Der #Elefantenbulle Craig, eine der bekanntesten Ikonen des #Amboseli -Ökosystems in #Kenia, ist im Alter von rund 54 Jahren gestorben. Craig galt als sogenannter «Super Tusker», also als seltener Bulle mit extrem grossen Stosszähnen, die fast bis zum Boden reichten. Laut Kenya #Wildlife Service starb er eines natürlichen Todes, bedingt durch sein hohes Alter.

Whilst the news was sad, it is encouraging to see that he could live his life to die of natural causes aged 54. A testament to the incorruptable dedication of the rangers and Maasai community protecting him from the big Asian crime syndicates.
Craig was indeed a gentle giant, who elevated you with his presence and calmness. This picture was taken by me crouching on the ground after having made sure he had sniffed and seen me and letting him walk up to me - I am sure he would not have harmed me, even if I had not moved out of his way with a few meters to spare.
It's important that old bulls and matriarchs are protected, as elephant society depends on their elders teaching the next generations beyond adulthood. Craig also often had a followership of young bulls, who learned from him. Young elephant bulls without such mentoring often grow to be less confident and more aggressive.
(When the other bulls are around, you could not get nearly as close as Craig was exceptionally calm around humans)

When the deep longing for #Africa hits me on a lazy Sunday, it's not animal close-ups but this kind of images I turn to. Embracing the wide plains and big skies in my heart.
When I see this pic, I can smell the #Savannah and the #Elephants. I feel the rays of the setting sun and the wind on my skin. I hear the distant sound of elephants feeding and the calls of a ring necked dive, a Burchell's Coucal and a pair of red billed hornbills.
It's perfection. ❤️
