Ishirō Honda's definitive kaiju film remains one of the strongest in the long running series, providing a bleak and powerful look at a nation shattered by nuclear devastation. The effects are understandably hokey but it doesn't matter - the film is far more serious than you may expect and it pisses in the face of every US version so far.

In memory of comedy writer Barry W. Blaustein who died yesterday, I revisited his documentary expose on the professional wrestling industry in 1999 - Beyond The Mat. In contrast to his work on SNL and various Eddie Murphy movies in the 80s and 90s, this is a grim and uncomfortable look at a world most of us are unfamiliar with. It's aged a bit these days but it remains the best documentary on grappling today. 😔

When I took an initial gander into the series The Institute, I wasn't into it. It seemed overblown as a concept, unrealistic. Now, with what Americans have been through, especially in the last year, this feels more "now." Also, the kid aspect of this gave me the faulty impression that this may be Harry-Potterish, but no, this is deadly serious. It has been criticized for not being dark enough.
