A little bit of history on AM²: it was created by ex-Anime Expo staff and volunteers who, for various reasons, wanted an alternative to Anime Expo. I remember some people were referring to it as "Revenge Con", especially due to the fact that it was held on the same weekend as Anime Expo in its first year. Despite it being a free entry con, it failed to draw a significant number away from Anime Expo. For the second year, it was held the weekend before Anime Expo, still free to attend, but it still did not bring in enough attendees to be successful.
