Also, there's a lot of #AlternateHistory in which Rome never falls. Screw that. What if Rome never rose?

In 387 BC, the Sennones seize their momentum and utterly obliterate Rome, also doing lots of damages to the socii. Then a massive cholera outbreak devastates the Italian peninsula, impeding the rise of political and miliatary powers.

Western Europe remains Celtic. Can the Maccabees win without Roman backing? Perhaps modern right-wingers idolise Carthage as the source of all good things.

So much #AlternateHistory has a Euramerican point of divergence. Here's a free idea for an untapped vein.

In 230 BC, a lucky arrow hits Ying Zheng , killing him, and so Qin fails to conquer Han. The Warring States never properly unify (at least until the Mongols come along), so instead of China, there are a bunch of kingdoms with related but distinct cultures. The fall of the Zhou in th east is remembered similarly to the disintegration of the Western Roman Empire.

Book Review | ***Combat Monsters: Untold tales of World War II***| anthology edited by Henry Herz

I’d read this fantastic collection of monster stories over the fall and winter and had been meaning to write a review. Since I’m not ready to commit to bookwrym or similar, I’ve posted my review on the *Monsterverse* community on Lemmy. Please check it out if you like monsters, WW II, alternate history, horror, diverse authors, and/or kaiju.

Henry Herz is not an author or editor known to me. Up to now, he’s specialized in children’s picture books and young adult anthologies. With every story in this collection meeting a good to excellent standard, he’s definitely an editor to look for in future.

Book Review | **Combat Monsters: Untold tales of World War II** | anthology edited by Henry Hertz - Star Trek Website

For those who are monster-curious, alternate history buffs, or outright fans of Godzilla and other kaiju, this may be an anthology to your taste. While most stories are not about kaiju, one of the best, in this anthology of consistently good to great stories, is very much a tale that belongs in the franchise. Beyond that, like the Titan hunters in the Monsterverse, there are many monsters from many cultures and traditions that could be integrated into the continuity. I didn’t know what to expect of this anthology, I’d never heard of the editor, Henry Hertz, but several science fiction and even some Treklit authors on my auto-buy list were identified as contributors in the early promotional announcements. So, I preordered on spec. While many science fiction anthologies from independent publishers are uneven, this one has not only no duds, there isn’t a single story that is less than good, some are excellent and potentially classics. The stories are presented in chronological order, covering the entire theatre of the Second World War, providing a loosely coherent narrative of unseen happenings in between known historical events. The editor has successfully attracted a diverse range of authors, including ones who write from the perspective of Indigenous and colonized peoples. One can only credit the editor for holding all these writers to a high standard. I’m definitely looking forward to future anthologies Henry Hertz will edit. My partner an alternate history buff, who zipped through the book over a weekend once I’d finished my more leisurely read, is ready to autobuy from this editor. It seems that the reviewer at Locus magazine [https://locusmag.com/review/combat-monsters-untold-tales-of-world-war-ii-edited-by-henry-herz-review-by-paul-di-filippo/] had a similar assessment in their spoilery review. Fortunately for Kaiju fans, Hertz has co-edited a new Kaiju-specific anthology coming out in hard cover this June from Titanbooks : Big Bad Book of Kaiju: Seventeen city-smashing stories of monsters [https://titanbooks.com/73033-the-big-bad-book-of-kaiju/].
