This morning, WFUV's great Corny O'Connell asked a "Question of the Day" that called to mind the best rock and roll novel I have ever read, "Anything Goes" by Madison Smartt Bell (still in print when I checked a few weeks ago). It starts with an unsettling scene, to say the least, of Kurt Cobain's death. Yet, for admirers of Cobain's music, this scene could be the thing to draw them into reading the book.

"Anything Goes" is rich with clearly drawn characters and a carefully crafted plot. It is mainly about a long-struggling touring bar band. Very close to the end of the book and close to the end of a mostly Southern tour, in Springfield, Vermont, band members suddenly learned it was getting serious airplay.

A compact disc was recorded to promote the book. The CD was cleared for nothing else and you're not going to hear it on the radio or YouTube. It includes the best version of the novel's best song, "Anything Goes." I have not even the slightest doubt this song could be a big hit if it was gotten into the right hands. What one CAN do is play Bell's album with Wyn Cooper, "40 Words for Fear," and listen with imagination to "Anything Goes." Maybe imagine yourself singing it.

BtW, Wyn Cooper, mentioned here, had a major hit as lyricist for the song that launched Sheryl Crow's national career, "All I Wanna Do." It was Marlboro College's greatest hit.
