Last one, but how could I not? From the best Minneapolis band of all time (apologies to the Revolution and the Dü), an ode to one of my all time favorite musicians from my (¿)favorite(?) band, AND the namesake of my first born - yeah, I have to. If you know it, you’re already singing along.

I never travel too far / without a little Big Star.

Ted Tocks Covers - Year 9 - Day 5

Wouldn’t It Be Nice

On this day 60 years ago The Beach Boys entered the studio and began to record ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’.

“Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new?
After having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through”

"Thirteen" is a song by the American rock band #BigStar. #RollingStone describes it "one of rock's most beautiful celebrations of adolescence", and rated it #396 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. It was written by #AlexChilton and #ChrisBell. #BillJanovitz of #BuffaloTom writes in his #AllMusic review of the song, "There are few songs that capture the aching innocence of adolescence as well" and calls it a "perfect melancholy ballad".

THE BOX TOPS
The Letter / Neon Rainbow
1967 Canada MONO pressing

It’s hard to believe that Alex Chilton was only 17 when this The Box Tops record came out.

And although this album is awesome, I don’t think anybody could have seen Big Star coming.

“The Letter” is one of the most perfect songs ever recorded. In one song, it takes The Box Tops less than two minutes to say what it took bands like The Grateful Dead 17 hours to NOT say.

This was the only record that Bill Cunningham and Danny Smythe were ever on, and their work is exemplary, particularly Cunningham’s bass and backing vocals.
The two of them were gone and replaced the very next year.

A gem of an album, but it’s all about “The Letter”.

"The Letter" is a song written by #WayneCarson that was first recorded by the American #rock band #theBoxTops in 1967. It was the group's first and most successful single, reaching number one on the record charts in the United States and Canada. It was also an international success and placed in the top ten in several other countries. The Box Tops lead vocalist #AlexChilton sang "The Letter" in a gruff #blueeyedSoul style. The song launched Chilton's career.
