The end wall of 1 Moray Place in the Strathbungo area of Glasgow. Built in 1859, it was designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson as part of a terrace of Classical Townhouses. Thomson himself lived here with his family between 1861 and his death in 1875.

Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's imposing Sixty Steps on Kelvinside Terrace in the West End of Glasgow. Built in the 1870s, the steps on the left provided access to the old Queen Margaret Bridge across the River Kelvin (now gone), while the massive retaining walll created a terrace ro allow the land on the otherwise steep hill to be developed.

When I posted the railings on the left yesterday, someone pointed out that they were probably designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, and sure enough a very similar design appears in the stencilling on his 1850s Holmwood House. However, I don't know of this is original or a recreation as part of Holmwood's restoration by the National Trust for Scotland.

Numbers 7 and 8 Moray Place on the Southside of Glasgow. Built in 1859, they were designed by the one and only Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, and they are just pure class. I'm always struck by quite how contemporary the Moray Place Townhouses look. They might have been built 164 years ago, but their design still doesn't look dated. If only more modern buildings were quite so timeless!
