The people round #gordonbrown were rather more sceptical so the attrition stopped - and was even reversed albeit partially - for a while from 2007 onwards. Unfortunately the business of advocating further degrading of state capacity can be pretty lucrative - especially if the beneficiaries of outsourcing think individuals or organisations can influence #labour !
Not sure if this is true but it would explain the bringing in of '#alanmilburn as an adviser to Streeting!
This is what happens when having an appointment is made a target in itself! It is horribly reminiscent of when medical assessment wards were set up in order to get down reported waiting times in accident and emergency departments. Perhaps a predictable consequence of allowing #alanmilburn - who like the #bourbons seems to have 'forgotten nothing and learnt nothing' - anywhere near the #departmentofhealth !
This was happening already under #alanmilburn more than twenty years - scandalous mark ups for the private sector were identified and publicised as early as 2004 - including by one #donaldroy !

I do not disagree - which is why the presence of #alanmilburn among those advising #wesstreeting is quite worrying. Under #alanmilburn the #nhs was paying 60% more for procedures undertaken by private providers than public provision would have cost! Incidentally quite a bit of the extra public borrowing last month appears to have been a one off payment to buy back armed services housing!
This is what happens when they listen to #alanmilburn rather than #nigelcrisp - the official who had to deal with the consequences of #alanmilburn for the #nhs long after #milburn had left government. Sadly I find myself reminded of the comment about the restored Bourbon monarchy in France two centuries ago 'They have forgotten nothing and learned nothing' !
Yes. #astroturf patient groups have always been a problem and worse still were enabled to flourish in the vacuum in more general representation of patients created by the abolition of community health councils in #england initiated by #alanmilburn but completed by others twenty one years ago! After 2010 #davidcameron set out to appease #bigpharma and their allies in the #rightwing media by discriminating in favour of cancer drugs to the point where less effective ones were kept!
Last time #alanmilburn damaged the reputation of the #nhs for cost effectiveness - and thus its credibility with #hmtreasury . However given the relative abundance of resources at the time this was not fatal and in time his successors - most notably #andyburnham - managed to repair it. This time round we may not be so lucky!
