Somewhat like Sharp Cheddar, I'm Gen X. My company laid off some engineers, including me, *just* before the AI bullshit kicked into high gear. And the layoffs have kept coming since then. It's been more than a year; I've been thinking of myself as involuntarily retired for a while now.
Not sure exactly what I'm going to do. Get some kind of day job that doesn't require 20 years experience or years of specialist training? Try to live off retirement savings years earlier than I'd planned to?
I refuse to use "AI". Even if it worked (it doesn't) and even if it didn't deskill its users (it does) and even if the C-suite didn't have unrealistic expectations about it (they do), it's still an ethical minefield and I'm not touching it. My open-source projects' code has been used to train all of them without my permission, and I'm damned if I'm going to give those companies a "customer" statistic.
