Demand the Bonn Climate Meetings provide 100% plant-based catering

We are asking the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to show climate action leadership by requiring the Bonn Climate Meetings (SB64) held each year to provide 100% plant-based catering and to establish a standing policy for all future UNFCCC subsidiary body sessions, intersessionals, and conferences, including those in Bonn, to offer 100% plant-based catering, ideally showcasing locally sourced vegan organic (veganic) and agroecological produce. In addition, we ask the UN to ensure their own summits, along with their cafeteria in New York City and the Bonn secretariat offices, provide 100% plant-based catering, following progressive examples set under initiatives like New York City's plant-based advancements. From 8 June to 18 June 2026, the United Nations will hold the 64th sessions of its Subsidiary Bodies (SB64) in Bonn, Germany, the headquarters of the UNFCCC Climate Change secretariat. These mid-year meetings bring together negotiators, experts, and stakeholders to advance critical work on mitigation, adaptation, finance, transparency, and the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Outcomes from Bonn sessions directly shape the agenda and decisions at the annual COP. Building on the momentum from COP28's dedicated food and agriculture day and the COP28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action, as well as COP30's continued focus on food systems, we need far greater urgency and consistency. The global food system, driven by expanding meat, dairy, and egg production, is transgressing planetary boundaries, threatening food security, human health, biodiversity, and animal wellbeing. Even if fossil fuel emissions stopped today, food system emissions alone could push warming beyond 1.5°C (Clark et al., 2020). A plant-based diet remains the single most effective dietary shift for climate mitigation, repeatedly endorsed by the IPCC. Yet delegates at recent COPs and subsidiary sessions have often struggled to access truly climate-friendly meals. YOUNGO, the official children and youth constituency of the UNFCCC, previously mobilized over 150 organizations in a joint letter demanding sustainable, plant-rich catering. Now is the moment for concrete leadership from the Bonn secretariat. We call for: • 100% plant-based catering at SB64 in Bonn (June 2026) and all future UNFCCC subsidiary body sessions, summits, and offices, prioritizing locally sourced, veganic produce where feasible. • Immediate negotiations toward a global Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the Paris Agreement. Over seventy cities, including Edinburgh, Amsterdam, and Los Angeles, have already endorsed the Plant Based Treaty and urged world leaders to negotiate it. This treaty would address the triple crisis of climate change, food insecurity, and rising living costs through a just transition to plant-based food systems. • A zero-tolerance approach to greenwashing by the animal agriculture lobby at Bonn and all UNFCCC events, ensuring industry representatives are not platformed to promote unproven or insufficient measures that contradict the latest IPCC science. It is essential for UNFCCC processes, especially at the Bonn headquarters, to model climate consistency through food choices. Let's nourish the planet, our bodies, and the negotiations by committing to plant-based catering at SB64 and beyond! Impact Assuming 5,000–10,000 participants (typical for Bonn subsidiary sessions) eating two vegan meals daily over ~10 days would deliver hundreds of thousands of climate-friendly plant-based meals. Swapping beef for plant-based proteins and dairy/cheese for alternatives could spare tens of thousands of metric tonnes of CO₂e emissions, significant land area (equivalent to multiple city blocks), and millions of litres of water, directly supporting the mitigation and resilience goals advanced in Bonn. Take Action Help this petition reach its goal: • Share this petition with your friends, family, and coworkers. Post about this petition on your social media accounts, online forums, and groups. • Ask your partners and community groups to sign and share the petition. Include a link to our petition on your website, blogs, newsletters, and social media bios. • Write to your elected officials and ask them to sign and share the petition. Tweet the UNFCCC, the Bonn secretariat, and SB64 organizers to make climate meetings vegan. Background What is the Plant Based Treaty? A global Plant Based Treaty proposes 3Rs (Relinquish, Redistribute, Restore) and 40 detailed policy proposals to transition the world toward plant-based food systems, halting animal agriculture's degradation of Earth's support systems. The Plant Based Treaty launched their Safe and Just Report at COP28, providing a framework to address food's role in crossing planetary boundaries and offering bold policy pathways for a plant-based shift. Goals: • A global Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the Paris Agreement. • Local implementation of best practices worldwide. Uncovering #decolonial pedagogies for learning #agroecological transitions: comparative analysis of #SouthAmerica cases

Michelle Bonatti, et al, October 2025, published in Global Environmental Change.

Highlights:

• Decolonial pedagogies can facilitate agroecological transition processes.
• Pedagogical models facilitate agroecological transitions by integrating diverse epistemologies in agriculture practices.
• This study identifies three contextual learning narratives: Living, Resistance, and Hybrid Pedagogies.
• A main archetype has been discovered, known as the 'South pedagogies archetype'.
• The operational decolonial pedagogies framework shows how agroecological knowledge is created in the territory.

Conclusion:

"This study reflects on the strengths, nuances, and contextual factors shaping three distinct learning processes, offering insights into the effectiveness of diverse pedagogical approaches for agroecology that value the epistemologies of the South. The research recognizes that potential agroecological transitions face challenges from entrenched power structures and the historical #erasure of knowledge systems, calling for more than technical adjustments—rather a fundamental revaluing of diverse ways of knowing and being is essential. In this context, this research responds to the pressing need for a deeper understanding of pluriversal knowledge systems, epistemologies of the South, and learning approaches that have emerged organically within the Latin American context, where agroecological movements have deep and strong roots.

The growth of agroecology, also as an academic discipline, presents both opportunities and challenges. While it validates traditional agricultural practices within Western scientific frameworks, it risks perpetuating colonial knowledge hierarchies if not grounded in decolonial perspectives. Decolonial pedagogies are fundamental for accelerating agroecological transitions. As shown in this study, traditional communities in #Colombia and #Peru have preserved and evolved their #agroecology knowledge systems through generations of #CollectiveLearning, offering profound insights into #Sustainable #FoodProduction that transcend the limitations of Western scientific methodologies. In parallel, decolonial pedagogies in the Brazilian case were essential to promote agroecological transition that started recently in the last decades.

"The three contextual narratives that emerged from the South pedagogy archetype are intricate and interconnected, defying simplistic categorization. This study shows how the South pedagogy archetype serves as a model of resistance to poverty and social exclusion through agroecology. As research understanding deepens, there is a pressing need to explore Indigenous pedagogies to unveil additional valuable approaches to learning that lead to more inclusive educational models that resonate with diverse learners and address complex global challenges.

"By showcasing the rich knowledge systems and alternative learning structures present in these three cases, this research provides valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and practitioners. These findings can inform the co-creation of strategies that nurture agroecological systems and transitions, embrace the growing diversity of agroecology approaches, and navigate the complexities inherent in designing learning processes that value multiple ways of being."

#ClimateChange & inequality solutions

"Green" growth is, for example, low-carbon #AgroEcological farming replacing high-carbon mono-industrial farming practices. "Growth" of an ecologically sustainable sector that replaces the ecologically damaging sector.

Make that agroecology business a #cooperative & we will have mitigated #ClimateChange & inequality

One foreseen problem, "we" (the more the better), have to do it, make it a reality, not only write about the solutions.
