@pinhman I'm not sure if it's all inherited, but I do know when I lived there in the 80s there were a lot more small #farms than there are now. These may be owned by families, who came to control more and more, buying out the neighbourhood, and now being a kind of landed #gentry. Many have become #agribusinesses, no matter the #family tree.

What is ā€˜ecological economics’ and why do we need to talk about it?

Ecological economics focuses on sustainability and development rather than efficiency and growth. Cities, as home to 70-80% of economic activity, are at the heart of the challenge of being sustainable.

Dr Danny Marks Dublin CityU said smallholder farmers were unfairly blamed for #Thailand’s air #pollution. Most hv contracts with major #Thai #agribusinesses which also hv footprints in neighbouring countries where burning occurs.. Greater scrutiny is needed of #factories & #industries .. There's no emissions database documenting Thailand’s 140,000 factories. Instead the law regulating water & air waste was weakened in 2019 so small factories don't report their pollution"

"Thai agribusinesses have a high degree of culpability for burning in neighbouring countries, such as Laos & Myanmar, due to their investments & introduction of #contractfarming schemes there. However.. no government has ever held these #agribusinesses accountable or penalised them for the burning. A good example Thailand could follow is #Singapore's 2014 #Transboundary Haze #Pollution Act that targets the business sector"

The Ministry of Public Health has blamed air pollution for causing 200,000 hospital admissions in the past week alone.
