When I was 13 years old, I randomly turned up to a punk / oi gig at a local community center, which was a charity fundraiser for AFA (Anti Fascist Action).
Playing was; The Oppressed, an 80's anti-fascist skinhead band; Angelic Upstarts, and Sham 69 - who are now legendary punk bands. It cost me £3 on the door, which wasn't actually that cheap at the time, but they served me beer at the bar, at £1.25 a pint. It was the first time I got drunk.
This was an important moment in my life, as those left wing older punks and skins (in their 20's) took me under their wing and looked after me.
I got in with the AFA, who I got to sort out some Nazi shit for me (and saw violence), but have forever since been anti-fascist at my core.
At 14, I started putting on my own punk gigs at a local pub. The known bands on that underground scene always seemed to be up for coming and playing my gigs, when they didn't so easily for others.
My gigs were always packed solid. And that pub knew I wasn't even old enough to drink, but I was packing it out for them, and they treated me like an adult.
I miss the culture of those days. Before the internet.
