Endre Ady (Hungarian poet, 1877–1919)

He was seriously ill when his brother tried to pressure him into securing a government position — as if poetry and survival could be traded for “usefulness”.

When persuasion didn’t work, there was another kind of pressure: the threat of sending him to a feared medical institution in Budapest, associated at the time with severe neurological and psychiatric illness. #adyendre #ady #hungary
