Great question.
We can break Adrenal Gland Health down into two basic principles:
- aspects that negatively affect function
- aspects that improve normal function
By far, the biggest dietary negative for the adrenal glands is blood sugar instability (pre-diabetes which shows up initially as cravings for carbs/sugars, fluctuating energy levels, tired after eating, needing a snack after just eating, and disrupted sleep). When blood sugars are abnormal, the adrenal glands have to pick up the slack. See the RESET Food Plan for tips. Other dietary factors involve excess caffeine consumption or other stimulants (all negatively affect the adrenals).
Support of the adrenals revolves around foods rich in B vitamins and vitamin C and in particular the medicinal herbs licorice and rehmannia.
