I see so many posts about how meditation is essential for mindfulness and
honestly it turned me off for years. Sitting still with my thoughts? No thanks.
But then I discovered that mindfulness doesn’t require meditation. It just
requires PRESENCE. And the simplest way to be present is to focus on your
breath. When I’m spiraling about the future: I focus on my current breath. When
I’m ruminating about the past: I count my exhale. When I’m overwhelmed: I slow
my breathing to 6 breaths per minute. It’s not meditation. I’m not clearing my
mind. I’m just… breathing with intention. And it works. The science backs this
up — controlled breathing activates the prefrontal cortex (rational thinking)
and dampens the amygdala (fear center). You’re literally rewiring your stress
response. Anyone else practice mindfulness without traditional meditation? What
does your practice look like?

I was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago and one thing that surprised me was how
much breathing exercises help with focus. Before a task I need to concentrate
on, I do 2 minutes of box breathing (4 seconds in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold). It’s
like a reset button for my brain. The key for me with ADHD is that it needs to
be SHORT. I can’t sit still for 20 minutes of meditation. But 2 minutes? That I
can do. Anyone else with ADHD found breathing techniques helpful? What works for
you?
