Demonschool is a fun game that has a lot of room to grow.
It's a story-focused puzzle-tactic game rather than a typical tactic JRPG.
Its biggest draw is art direction—amazing character and monster design, great manga-inspired 2D artwork, both readable and distinctive UI, and really decent music.
The story is your typical young people need to save the world from demon invasion while also attending school. It has some fine ideas, scenes, and character moments but suffers from quip dialogue and cartoon characterization, which too often undermines competent storytelling.
It needs polishing in order to achieve what I believe is the intended balance between action, horror, and comedy, similar to that found in the TV series *Buffy* or the currently popular exorcism shōnen series.
The environment looks really good, so it's a shame that it lacks exploration and dungeon crawling. Even locations were just made for this, like a Cube-movie-inspired bomb shelter, a prison, and even a liminal space. It could elevate both fighting and story sections and even better the game's pacing.
