Iran on the field with backpacks: the memory of the girls killed in the school of Minab.

A simple gesture, but symbolic, to remember the youngest victims in the all-girls elementary school in Minab, in the U.S. attack on February 28th that marked the beginning of the ongoing war between Iran, the U.S., and Israel. The Iranian national football team chose to take to the field with black armbands and colorful backpacks in honor of the friendly match, played on neutral ground in Antalya and behind closed doors, against Nigeria, which ended 2-1 in favor of the opponents. Before the kickoff, during the playing of the national anthem, captain Mehdi Taremi and his teammates held small school backpacks, in purple and pink. Taremi, formerly a striker for Inter, held a pink backpack to his chest, turning the moment into a silent message of sorrow and solidarity.

The gesture was dedicated to the girls killed on February 28th when the missile attack struck the Shajareh Tayyebeh all-girls elementary school in Minab, in the southern Hormozgan province, on the first day of the conflict in the Middle East. According to Iranian media reports, the victims were 175, of which 165 were girls and young women. The bench also participated with emotion at the moment, sharing a collective memory before the start of the game. The match ended 1-2 in favor of Nigeria with goals from Simon and Adams; for Iran, Taremi scored.
