Greens in Chile and in Europe: It is the Same Struggle

In this insightful talk, Dr. Alfredo Sfeir Younis (former Chilean presidential candidate) discusses the necessary paradigm shift toward global sustainability and environmental justice, emphasizing the shared struggles between Chile and Europe. Dr. Sfeir Younis argues that sustainable development must be the governing principle to which all economic, social, and political policies must adjust, insisting this is the only option we have. Key points include the need to move from simple competitiveness to eco-competitiveness, which requires internalizing the abatement cost (cleanup cost) of environmental destruction. Crucially, he stresses that we cannot allow the benefits received in one region to come at the expense of environmental or social destruction somewhere else, directly challenging the notion of a "green economy" built on a "dirty economy." He concludes that a strong fiscal policy is central to the future of sustainability, while citizenship demands active participation in both government and market decisions.
