Nightflowering silene (Silene noctiflora, Nachtnelke) is a delicate wildflower with pale, deeply notched petals that open at dusk and release a sweet scent. Native to meadows, field edges, and disturbed soils, it thrives in nutrient-rich habitats. Ecologically, it plays an important role in supporting nocturnal pollinators—especially moths—by providing nectar during the night, when few other flowers are in bloom. This makes it a valuable species for maintaining nighttime pollination networks and enhancing overall biodiversity in semi-natural and agricultural landscapes. The field campion is often regarded as a ‘weed’, but is considered ‘endangered’ in the Alpine region.
