I don’t know if anybody who follows me here is interested in old and obscure abstract games, but this blog I stumbled on today is an absolute treasure trove. http://sagme.blogspot.com/ #AbstractGames #BoardGames

Talking about old and older obscure abstract games

Review: It was like there were pixels: red ones, blue ones and black ones. There was one, two, three or four for each, sometimes none, in all sorts of combinations. You could combine them to give you five, six, seven or eight in the different colours. It was a real puzzle. You wanted to create the lowest or highest difference between the numbers in the centre and those in your hand. That difference changed over time. It was D.O.T by Chris Priscott from Unfringed.

Sprouts 2025 will be on April 12, 2025. Sprouts is a #CombinatorialGames conference with a focus on undergraduates.
We traditionally have a focus on math and computer science, but are very willing to broaden our scope. The homepage with the Call for Talks is: https://kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts2025/

We will have talks for and by undergraduates and human and AI tournaments. Our game this year is: Toppling Dominoes, which you can play here: https://kyleburke.info/DB/combGames/topplingDominoes.html

The AI tournament is held in JavaScript. Instructions for submitting a player are here: https://kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts2025/sprouts2025ComputerTournament.php. I have had recent success with students training their players in Python, then using #TensorFlowJS to port it over to JS.

Registration is free! Please see the homepage for instructions to register.

Reef is a game of planning ahead and pattern building.  An easy game to understand but also very interesting because you want to always be setting up the optimal scenario for your next turn or two.

Great game with great components.

An enduring interest of mine is “game systems” — that is, game components which can be used to play multiple games. A deck of cards is the canonical example, though there are others. One game system which I haven’t seen but believe would be fairly flexible: a collection of small colored bowls and colored stones. Beyond the obvious mancala games (of which there are many), circular bowls can be arranged into square or hex grids to play a variety of abstracts. #boardgames #mancala #abstractgames

Et si on vous obligeait à jouer 7 parties en même temps ? C'est ce qui m'est arrivé lors de mon "#EVG". Lanza el dodo

At the beginning of the year i had an itch about making an abstract game in which captured pieces must be placed back on the board. Well that itch lead to CLAUSTRO, feel free to try it out at home (you only need a 5x5 grid and 2 sets of 4 pawns).
I hope you'll find it engaging and compelling as I wanted it to be.

Gridstones! Such a great abstract game that you can play with up to 7 players.

On your turn, either add a stone to the board or remove a stone. Manipulate the stones so that they match the pattern on the cards you were given. You can rotate the card to make it match the board and you can score a match before you play your tun and after.

The first player to match the patterns on all their cards wins.
