The first performance of Seán O'Casey's the Plough and the Stars took place at the Abbey theatre on 8 February 1926. The play was well received on its opening night. But on subsequent nights audience unrest began and on 11 February Cumann na mBan and Sinn Féin members rioted at perceived insults to the men who had died during the Rising.

The Playboy of the Western World by John Millington Synge was first performed at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, on 26 January 1907. It is set in Michael James Flaherty's public house in Mayo during the early 1900s. It tells the story of Christy Mahon, a young man running away from his farm, claiming he killed his father.

Has anyone seen Na Peirsigh in the Abbey? I always like seeing productions of ancient Greek plays, although they can often go horribly wrong (usually by trying to make them relevant to contemporary concerns in a heavy-handed manner). As the official oldest surviving play in the world I think I have to see this, plus it provides an opportunity to see whether I have made any actual progress with my Irish.
