Liam O'Mara IV, PhDThe #Voortrekkers established #Natalia in 1839 after defeating the #Zulu. The #UK in turn defeated the #Boers & annexed it as #ColonyOfNatal in 1843. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1897 it was doubled in size when the formerly independent kingdom of #Zululand (#kwaZulu) was added to it.

Game reserve in Zululand takes delivery of several rhinos as part of #RhinoRewild initiative

"In what is reported to be part of the largest rewilding project in the world, a northern Zululand game reserve recently welcomed several southern white rhinos to its fold.
"This latest translocation is the year-end culmination in this 10-year rewilding project, now in its second year, which aims to relocate over 2 000 rhinos across Africa.
"The relocation formed part of African Parks’ Rhino #Rewild initiative in the NPO’s bid to rescue the species from the brink of #extinction.
"This rewilding effort will supplement the reserve’s existing rhino population with new genetics, with all rhinos dehorned before their translocation [sad that has to happen].
"'We are proud to be receiving a number of white rhinos from African Parks in terms of their rhino rewilding programme,' said the chairperson of the receiving reserve, which cannot be named for protection of the rhino population.
"The project is a successful collaboration between #WeWildAfrica and the #WildlifeEmergencyFund."
