"the great park tree Zelkova" is how Colin Tudge describes the 欅 ケヤキ Keyaki trees. A Japanese site said this wood is very hard to chop, but it also said that YamaMomo was the toughest wood they ever split. My experience of one tree each puts Cinammon and Kurogane Holly over Yamamomo in difficulty but maybe there were extenuating circumstances, or maybe the guy writing the Japanese site had more of an urge to sell fancy axes than opportunity to build up a lot of wood splitting experience,
It's wierd to see a magnificent tree like this and think of turning it into firewood. But I've seen at least two trees like this just fallen over after a typhoon. The root bases were shallow. Hopefully this tree will be ok with the roots all tangled up in the IchiiGashi evergreen oaks and KOrogane Holly trees that surround it..
