The origins of Esch Castle in Luxemburg are unfortunately unknown. In the 12th century it was the residence of the Lords of Esch, a wealthy and influential local noble family serving the counts of Luxemburg. From their impressive castle in an unconquerable location on a rock above the Sauer river they ruled over an extensive territory. After the family died out for lack of a male heir the castle was managed jointly by several families who had inherited a share in the castle. But as the time of castles came to an end Esch Castle fell into ruins. Today the site is in possession of and maintained by the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg.
Esch-sur-Sûre is not to be confused with Esch-sur-Alzette, which is another city in the southern part of Luxemburg.
