Why support local bike shops (e.g., in Monterey County, https://bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tourists/need-something-maam)?

Here’s one reason: When Cycle House Bike Co. owner Stacy heard about this 14-year-old’s situation, she was moved to help. Report from

Joel Mendoza, North Monterey County Fire Chief, shared his favorite “game” growing up: Follow the Leader on BMX bicycles! And he adds, "Honestly, I still feel a bit bad that as a society we moved so quickly from all that physical activity to the digital world.” Details: https://www.montereycountynow.com/news/cover/local-officials-peel-off-their-professional-personas-to-share-their-favorite-games-and-reveal-if/article_6bf6b77e-a0cb-4cbe-b49c-dd32c912e819.html

"Although even the commissioners shared some hesitation, they did vote to recommend [Carlsbad] city council still impose the minimum age requirement as a first step.

"They are also recommending council adopt a rule to prohibit passengers for anyone under 16 and look into lobbying the state to create even more protections surrounding e-bikes.”

"No new E-Bike laws for now, Santa Cruz says education is the answer” by Briana Mathaw for #KION

"'Riding e-bikes, younger than they would get a license? They're really missing that opportunity to know how to behave on our roadways with other roadway users. And so [our focus is] enhancing the amount of education that we put out,' Claire Gallogly said.” (Gallogly, while not identified as such in KION story, is a City of Santa Cruz transportation planner, since 2015.)

No new E-Bike laws for now, Santa Cruz says education is the answer

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) – As e-bikes become more popular across Santa Cruz, local officials are responding to growing concerns about safety, especially when it comes to young riders. Instead of rushing to implement new laws, the city’s Transportation Commission is focusing on education as the primary solution. We think we should let the state

As the San Diego County, California’s City of Carlsbad "Snapshot of fines associated with violations” in https://www.carlsbadca.gov/departments/streets-traffic/traffic-safety/electric-bikes notes, “The actual fine does not include approximately $300 dollars in additional court fees.”

Similarly true here in Monterey County. For example, while state law allows a $25 fine for Helmet Required [for minors], 21212(a) CVC, in actuality, if you’re under 18 and are cited for no helmet in Monterey County, you’re typically going to be out $193 due the court, not $25. That’s why Bicycling Monterey offers an alternative https://bikemonterey.org/bike-equity-project-alternative-to-fine-for-traffic-citations.html that is appreciated by local families: https://bikemonterey.org/youth-bike-and-sometimes-receive-citations.html.

Donations to help support that project — or to provide helmets for youth without one — are needed and appreciated. How to donate: https://bikemonterey.org/about/financial-donations

“Cycling apparel” for many of us means just regular clothing—#NoSpandexRequired. It makes sense that others, e.g., racers or long-distance riders, do prefer specific types of fabric and clothing design.

Then there are teens. 💚 😎 Many value clothing as a form of self-expression! For some, they’d like apparel that indicates “I bike,” but their budget may not allow such purchases. That’s why we appreciated that on April 13, our #MontereyBay neighbors, Ibis Cycles of Santa Cruz https://ibiscycles.com/, provided apparel for some youth participating in our cycling education activities. Ibis contributed three Ibis/Giro jerseys, four pair of Ibis/Giro shorts, one Ibis/Giro t-shirt, and two Ibis sweatshirts. Thank you, neighbors!
