“Cycling apparel” for many of us means just regular clothing—#NoSpandexRequired. It makes sense that others, e.g., racers or long-distance riders, do prefer specific types of fabric and clothing design.

Then there are teens. 💚 😎 Many value clothing as a form of self-expression! For some, they’d like apparel that indicates “I bike,” but their budget may not allow such purchases. That’s why we appreciated that on April 13, our #MontereyBay neighbors, Ibis Cycles of Santa Cruz https://ibiscycles.com/, provided apparel for some youth participating in our cycling education activities. Ibis contributed three Ibis/Giro jerseys, four pair of Ibis/Giro shorts, one Ibis/Giro t-shirt, and two Ibis sweatshirts. Thank you, neighbors!

As we pointed out at the last #CalBike Policy Advisory Council meeting, although California legislation allows for a $25 fine for helmet citation (for minors), court costs mean that $25 becomes $193 in our county courts.

Tonight’s letter writing (below) provides one example of saving a local family money—in this case, $386, as the minor had received two citations. We do our best to tailor each minor’s community service to their individual learning style and family circumstances.

Our spirits were lifted today to receive a contribution from someone unknown to us. We don’t know how John McCarthy found the Bicycling Monterey site and projects, but we’re very grateful he responded with a generous contribution to help support our Education Projects. This was especially appreciated because of the increasing number of hours (including into wee hours last night) that we’ve been giving to educate court-referred youth, providing them an alternative to paying hefty fines (e.g., in Monterey County, typically $193 for helmet citation, including court costs).
