I Was a West Bank Settler. This Is Why I Refused to Serve in the IDF
by Aharon Dardik (Israeli-American ex-settler, conscientious objector to the Israeli military, and nonviolent activist at Columbia University), Op-Ed in Haaretz
Memorial Day is this week. It is a significant anniversary for me: these were the first days of my conscientious objection to military service in the Israeli Air Force. This is the fourth anniversary of that choice, made right before Operation Guardian of the Walls began.
Near the end of the #YomHaZikaron program, the Jerusalem Youth Chorus performed its current song, "A Different Way", which I thought was really beautiful, and should be heard by more people.
The version on their website was recorded while on tour in #Boston on April 14th: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Coc3zYpE__o

Yom HaZikaron (יום הזכרון), Israeli memorial day, is marked by ceremonies honoring losses in war and terrorism. For almost twenty years, Israeli and Palestinian ex-combatants and bereaved families have created a joint Memorial Day ceremony to honor all the dead, call for an end to bloodshed, and foster reconciliation and a political solution to the conflict. This year's program was prerecorded and streamed to minimize the chance of disruption (and also, West Bank and Gaza residents are barred from participating in person, and could only attend online). The event's YouTube livestream was apparently hacked (most people watched via Facebook), but the recording can now be viewed in its entirety here:

From @haaretzcom, the flower called "Macabees' Blood" is considered everlasting, since it retains its bold red color long after it is picked.
It became the chosen symbol of commemoration for #YomHaZikaron, a perfect blend of grief and botany.

“#YomHaZikaron is a day when the people of Israel commemorate, mourn & remember the over 28,468 Kedoshim, IDF soldiers & victims of terrorists who were murdered HY"D. As a siren pauses life in Israel to begin the day, I'll be commemorating one of these holy souls every 30 minutes.”
Today, and every day, take the time to tell someone how happy you are that they are in your life.
You never know what tomorrow brings

Those that died, don't care about our worries
They don't wonder what tomorrow brings
They can't hear our tears or memories
They can't laugh as the birds sing
Those that died, and left us here
With a yearn to future that could be
With a gaping hole in our heart
And a smile which is just a memory
